Similar books...?

So, I'm a reader of teen books.  I'll browse the teeny tiny teen section at our local library and decide on something.  Two years ago, Hallowmere piqued my interest.  I read the three books they had, then had to buy the other three in the series.  I was delightedly anticipating the 7th book, The Marsh Kings Daughter... but it was never released.

Some craziness about the author, Tiffany Trent, not owning the rights to her stories, and the publishing company had decided to focus only on two series of books... which I might add already contain a bazillion books within them.  *sigh*

Trent is hoping to regain the rights to her books or that the publishing company will come to it's senses... Here's hoping.

Well, my sister was looking for something to read, so I practically forced her into reading what is available of the Hallowmere series.  She fell in love with it as much as I did.

Basically the first three books are THE story, which spans the years of 1865 & 1866.  They're are two types of Fey; Hallowed and Unhallowed [the baddies] and Corinne, whome the first three books are centered around, gets drawn up in a world she only thought was fairy tale, trying to fight off the Unhallowed.  At the end of book 3, everyone will separate and are sent to various Fey raths [dwelling places] to collect Rath Stones [too complicated to explain for this summary, you'll have to read the book], which must not fall into the hands of the Unhallowed.

So, here you have books 4 - 7, which center on one of the girls in the particular rath they were thrown into and their search for that rath stone.  I'm guessing that we'll eventually [if these books ever finish getting published] get to Mara and Corinne's stories in their particular search for a rath stone and then everyone will come back to the present day of 1866 and we get to a conclusion.  Because there are 4 more books yet to be published in order to finish out the series.

So... I decided to read these books again, and of course was not let down.  They are still worth reading.  However, I found myself becoming confused on certain points.

There was a book trilogy I read right after Hallowmere... The Gemma Doyle Trilogy.

I rather enjoyed this series of books, but felt that the end of the third book was entirely too rushed, as if the author simply could no longer be bothered with her creation anymore.  But, I was hard pressed, trying to figure out which incident happened in which book because there were so many similarities.

At the beginning of each series, both Corrine and Gemma have lost both parents and are summarily sent away to boarding schools for girls.   There are foreign girls who are their friends, there is magic involved; other worlds and other-worldly creatures including mermaids.  They are both trying to learn magic and end up down wells of water.  They also both must battle the evil beings [and Fey!.. or is it just the Fey?]... they are also both at one point in London and both visit the banks of the River Thames where the poor drag the mud to find anything of worth.  They also both have visions of things happening.

Anyway.  I thought it was high time I re-read the Gemma Doyle books just to place it firmly in my mind as well as figuring out the exact similarities... did someone copy from someone else?  Or am I just finding similarities.  We'll see, because I checked them out from the library today and intend to start on Rebel Angels before bed.
